Houston Police Partner with Agencies to Combat Holiday Drunken Driving

The Houston Police Department (HPD) has established a joint initiative with seven other agencies to combat drunken driving fatalities during the holiday season. The effort attempts to minimize impaired driving by increasing patrols and raising community awareness.

In a news event on Thursday, Police Chief Noe Diaz revealed that Houston will have 33 drunk driving fatalities in 2024. While this is a decrease from the 39 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2023, the city is determined to continue decreasing the toll.

"Our goal is zero fatalities," Chief Diaz stated. "This partnership strengthens our ability to protect Houstonians during a time when impaired driving incidents tend to rise."

The announcement, which was attended by Houston Mayor John Whitmire and local neighborhood leaders, emphasized the significance of community involvement in avoiding impaired driving. Mayor Whitmire emphasized the shared responsibilities of people and law enforcement to ensure safer roads, particularly during the holidays.

Increased enforcement will focus on high-risk areas and periods, with officers looking for signs of intoxication and urging the use of designated drivers or ride-sharing services.

"This isn't just about enforcement; it's about saving lives," Diaz stated. "We urge everyone to make responsible choices and look out for one another."

The collaborative endeavor underscores Houston's overall dedication to road safety and public health. As the holiday season begins, residents are urged to enjoy responsibly and use available tools to prevent driving while impaired.

Together, the city and its partners strive to make this season safer for all drivers.
