Houston OEM Issues Arctic Blast Warning: Prepare for Winter Weather Impacts

The Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has alerted residents to prepare for an approaching Arctic blast. The severe cold temperatures and the potential for snow, ice, sleet, or freezing rain could significantly affect life, property, and infrastructure.

To ensure safety, OEM highlights the importance of safeguarding the Four P’s:

  • People: Dress warmly in layers and check on family, friends, and neighbors, especially those vulnerable to the cold or without housing. Resources for individuals experiencing homelessness, including shelter information, are available via the Coalition for the Homeless. Call 2-1-1 for additional support.
  • Pets: Bring pets indoors or provide a warm shelter. Under the Safe Outdoor Dog Act, pets cannot be left outside in unsafe conditions. Report unattended animals to the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce at 832-927-PAWS.
  • Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes and open sink cabinets to prevent freezing.
  • Plants: Cover or bring plants indoors to avoid frost damage.

Residents are urged to remain informed and keep up with updates from local authorities. For tips on ensuring pet safety, check out BARC. You can report animal cruelty online through the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce. Keep cozy and ready!
